Synopsis

In E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View, young Lucy Honeychurch travels through Italy with her cousin and chaperone, Charlotte Bartlett. A small dispute over hotel rooms introduces Lucy to the unconventional George Emerson and his father. Back in England, Lucy becomes engaged to the polished Cecil Vyse, but her growing feelings for George force her to consider what she truly wants. The novel’s humor is dry and gently satirical. Forster finds comedy in awkward social encounters, rigid manners, and characters who try to control how others should behave. The story pairs that wit with romance and Lucy’s journey toward greater honesty and independence.

E. M. Forster
E. M. Forster (1879–1970) was an English novelist, essayist, and critic. Born in London, he studied at King’s College, Cambridge, where he later became an honorary fellow. His writing was shaped by travel, especially visits to Italy and India, which broadened his interest in how people from different backgrounds understand one another. Forster is best known for novels including A Room with a View, Howards End, and A Passage to India. His stories often explore class, social convention, personal freedom, and the possibility of human connection. He wrote with clarity and wit, bringing lively characters and social observation to complex questions about English society and its relationship with other cultures. Alongside fiction, Forster wrote short stories, essays, and literary criticism, including Aspects of the Novel. He was also a public advocate for tolerance and individual liberty. His novels remain widely read for their humane perspective, memorable characters, and thoughtful balance of humor and seriousness. See all books →
