A sparkling comedy of wit

Synopsis

In Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Jack and Algernon each invent a second identity to escape social duties and pursue romance. Their deceptions lead to mistaken identities, tangled courtships, and a series of witty encounters with Gwendolen, Cecily, and the formidable Lady Bracknell. The comedy sparkles with dry wit, clever wordplay, and absurd situations. Wilde gently satirizes Victorian manners and the importance placed on wealth, family background, and respectability. Its humor comes from sharp dialogue, playful misunderstandings, and the characters’ delightfully serious treatment of trivial matters, making it a light, entertaining comedy of manners.
