Why We Recommend It

Science fiction with a conscience and a sense of humor. Morton's satire skewers our craving for moral certainty without ever punching down or reaching for shock — just a clever premise, sharp wit, and characters far more confident than qualified. As one reader put it: “witty, clever, and discreetly poignant.”

Synopsis

Gilbert Rochdale Eastman, a scientist and inventor, builds a system that can model the outcome of almost any decision. Guided by feedback from a woman in the future — who tells him which of his present-day views her era considers immoral — he sets out to make the world better. But as the system grows more certain, tolerance for error shrinks, until the pursuit of moral perfection begins solving every day out of existence.
