The Phoenix and the Carpet

A magical family adventure
StyleCharacter-DrivenGenreClassicFiction

Synopsis

Five siblings discover that their new carpet is magical and can take them on adventures when they make a wish. Their travels become even livelier when they meet a vain, talkative Phoenix, whose grand ideas and dramatic manner add to the children’s scrapes. First published in 1904, the book is the second in Nesbit’s trilogy that begins with Five Children and It. The comedy grows from the children’s lively personalities, their magical mishaps, and the Phoenix’s self-important theatrics. Its imaginative adventures and playful tone make it a cheerful, clean read.

About the Author

EN
E. Nesbit
E. Nesbit (1858–1924), born Edith Nesbit, was an English author and poet best known for her imaginative children’s books. She spent parts of her childhood in England and France, and her experiences of family life later informed the lively children and households in her stories. Nesbit wrote more than 60 books for children, including The Story of the Treasure Seekers, The Railway Children, and Five Children and It. Her young characters are spirited, resourceful, and imperfect, often finding adventure close to home. Nesbit’s combination of fantasy, humor, and everyday family life helped shape modern children’s literature. Alongside her writing, Nesbit was active in political and social causes and helped found the Fabian Society. Her books remain popular for their warmth, mischievous humor, and child-centered view of the world. See all books →
