Queen Lucia

A satirical village social comedy
StyleSatireGenreClassicSatire

Synopsis

In the English village of Riseholme, Emmeline “Lucia” Lucas reigns as the self-appointed leader of local society. She’s determined to maintain her position when new interests and personalities threaten to challenge her influence. The novel’s comedy unfolds through village rivalries, social posturing, and Lucia’s spirited efforts to stay on top. Published in 1920, it begins Benson’s Mapp and Lucia series. Benson gently skewers social climbing and the urge to seem more cultured and important than one is. Lucia’s lively character and the village’s polite rivalries make for witty, clean comedy.
