Synopsis

In The Second Thoughts of an Idle Fellow, Jerome K. Jerome offers humorous essays on subjects like indecision, wanting what we can’t have, following advice, and minding other people’s business. Each piece turns a familiar human habit into a comic reflection, rather than telling one continuous story. Jerome’s conversational voice, gentle irony, and playful exaggeration make everyday foibles amusing. Some essays reflect the gender attitudes of their time, but the humor is mainly built on witty observations and wordplay.

Jerome K. Jerome
Jerome K. Jerome (1859–1927) was an English writer, humorist, and playwright. Born in Walsall, he worked in several jobs—including as an actor and journalist—before establishing himself as a successful author. He wrote novels, plays, essays, and short stories, but is best known for Three Men in a Boat (1889), inspired by a Thames boating trip. The book’s comic observations and eccentric companions made it an enduring favorite. Jerome continued writing throughout his life, including a sequel, Three Men on the Bummel. His lively, conversational humor helped establish him as one of the best-loved comic writers of his time. See all books →
